Laurence biographer Kesler Woodward wrote, “In Alaska, Laurence is a legendary figure. To the general public he is so synonymous with grand representation of the North, and most especially of Mount McKinley, North America’s highest peak, that his painting has come to condition the way many Alaskans see their own land. For the state’s contemporary artists, such widespread public acceptance of Laurence’s now more than half-century-old image of the Alaskan landscape as the only ‘true’ picture of the North casts a large shadow.”
