Arthur Davenport Fuller (1889-1966)
Not This Trip, Old Pal, 1917
signed and dated "A. D. Fuller '17" lower right
oil on canvas on panel, 40 1/2 by 26 in.
"Not This Trip, Old Pal" depicts a young man in military dress standing at a gate on a path, looking down at his setter before he leaves and joins the marching soldiers on the road deploying to Europe. Hercules Powder Co. issued the work as a print first in 1917 for World War I, and again in 1943 with the caption, "In the spirit of 'We did it once; we'll do it again,' Hercules dedicates anew its 1918 calendar, 'Not This Trip, Old Pal,' to Americans who are fighting and working for Victory." A copy of this print is in the Pritzker Military Museum and Library in Kenosha, Wisconsin.
Fuller painted a companion piece titled "A Surprise Party," published as a print in 1919, which features the soldier returning home to the same dog, who is followed by a brood of rambunctious puppies.
Fuller was born in Exeter, New Hampshire, in 1889. He studied at Exeter Academy, Harvard University, the Fenway School of Illustration in Boston, and the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts. An ardent sportsman all his life, he became known for his hunting and fishing pictures, charming covers, and story illustrations. When Fuller died in 1966 at the age of seventy-seven, his house was on Plover Lane in Saugatuck Shores, Westport, Connecticut. His "New York Times" obituary noted, "Mr. Fuller was best-known for his pictures of wild life and sporting subjects. His illustrations appeared in such magazines as 'The Saturday Evening Post' and 'Field and Stream'." Among his memberships and accomplishments during his lifetime, he was a member of the Harvard Club, the Salmagundi Club, the Society of Animal Artists, and the Society of Illustrators in New York. Today his papers are at the University of Oregon, and his works can be found in the permanent collections of the National Army Museum in London, England, and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
