“Lee’s scratchboard drawings in black and white started a revival of the technique, which for a time had been almost forgotten. His book illustrations were widely admired - and copied, sometimes almost exactly. Artists commented upon his confident use of space in scratchboard work, as they did upon the elimination of nonessentials and the fidelity to nature, which made them seem almost colorful...Lee left areas blank because of his liking for space, which suggested the freedom that he always wanted to convey.”
