Born in the Netherlands in 1830, Joseph Antonio Hekking was an early American painter of talent and renown, working in the detailed style of the Hudson River School. In 1859 he exhibited several paintings of the Adirondacks at the National Academy of Design. He served in the Civil War and taught art in Cherry Valley, New York. Over the course of his career, Hekking showed at the National Academy and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, among other major exhibitions.
