Biography: Born in the United States, Howard Helmick attended the Ohio Mechanics Institute in Cincinnati and later traveled to Paris and London where he became friendly with artist James Abbott McNeill Whistler. He exhibited at London's Royal Academy and several of the titles shown there suggest Irish subjects. The RHA, Dublin lists exhibits by him in 1879 and 1889 and his time spent in Cork was recorded by a writer friend, Hawthorne.
