18th Century Portrait of Benjamin Franklin
American, 18th century. Oil on hand woven canvas, unframed. A seated portrait of Benjamin Franklin, unsigned; 30.75 x 24.25 in. (canvas size).
The work is undoubtedly a copy of the portrait by Jean-Baptiste Greuze (French, 1725-1805). However, the work is late 18th century and executed on hand woven canvas. The work was likely copied shortly after the original, as Franklin spent a great deal of time in France and was a well known American figure there at the time.
Craquelure, surface grime, patches in back.
