American, early 19th century. A Federal sofa in casuarina, with ivory upholstery, having an arched back, continuing to open reeded arms, with turned supports and legs; ht. 36, wd. 71, dp. 29 in.
Besides its graceful form, this sofa is notable for the use of the Australian wood casuarina, an unlikely material to be found in 19th century America.
Provenance: Ex Sotheby's Lammot du Pont Copeland Auction, January 2002, Lot 105.
Property from the Collection of Dr. M. Donald Hayes. To Be Sold Without Reserve.
