This painting was most likely painted in Munich, or shortly after Duveneck's return to Covington, Ohio. He studied at the Munich Royal Academy from 1869 until the later months of 1873. This was the first of several trips to the Bavarian capital, during which Duveneck discovered paintings by Wilhelm Leibl, which would become a crucial influence on his subsequent work.
Professionally cleaned and restored in 2017. Old relining. Old repair u.l. corner, just left of the sitter's face and old relining. In-painting, with a large area where the old repair is. Other spots of in-painting throughout.
