American (Cincinnati, Ohio), 19th century. An Empire sofa in mahogany, attributed to the H.B. Mudge Furniture Company of Cincinnati, Ohio, having a carved and pierced leaf crest, scrolled arms, with tufted upholstery, raised on casters; ht. 39, wd. 84, dp 26 in.
Founded in 1837, the H.B. Mudge Furniture Company occupied a six story building on West Second Street in Cincinnati, where it produced a variety of household furniture. According to the 1879 edition of Kenny's Illustrated Cincinnati, the factory was "one of the most complete in the city" and used "only the best seasoned lumber."
