American (Pennsylvania), 1869. A jacquard wool coverlet in four colors made by German immigrant Phillip Schum in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, having an eggshell colored base and blue, green, and red curvilinear designs with patriotic, animal, and floral motifs, including a portrait of George Washington in each of the four corners; 78 x 72 inches.
The presence of green makes the coverlet unusual due to the difficulty with which green dye was synthesized. Blue and red dyes were made from indigo and madder root but green was a harder color to create.
