Ellen Stanton was the second wife of Edwin Stanton (1814-1869) who served as secretary of war to President Lincoln and Johnson. Stanton was suspected of being complicit in John Wilkes Booth's assassination of Lincoln.
Florence Mackubin resided in Baltimore for most of her life. She made a career painting the portraits of upper class women in the eastern United States and England.
