Rare California US Mail Steamship Co. Broadside, 1859
Printed broadside, 28 x 42 in., advertising the United States Mail Steamship Company's passage from New York to California via Panama aboard the steamship Moses Taylor, with Civil War Medal of Honor recipient John McGowan as Commander of the vessel. Broadside reads, in part: Passengers will be forwarded by Panama Railroad, and embark, free of expense, by Steamer Taboga, on board the Pacific Mail Steamship Co’s magnificent Steamship Sonora. Featuring a large, detailed illustration of a steamship at center. Printed by F. Nesbitt & Co., New York.
Dated Monday, September 5th, research shows that this broadside would have been printed in 1859. The Moses Taylor was launched in 1857 and was owned by the United States Mail Steamship Company from 1858 to 1860. As further evidence of the printing date, F.R. Baby was only Commander of the Sonora from 1859 until 1861, and 1859 is the only year where September 5th fell on a Monday.
Several tears at the folds and issues of scattered foxing.
