Russian Devotional Brass Plaque
Russian, 19th century. Oil on canvas, trimmed and laid on a silk covered wood panel with a silverplated metal revetment, housed in a round pierced brass frame adorned by six Russian Orthodox Crosses incised in brass reserves. The underlying central figure represents Christ surrounded by a raised and painted brass halo. The piece is unmarked; dia. 22.5 in., 24 in. (including reserves).
Provenance: Property from the Estate of Dr. William Blake Selnick, Cincinnati, OH
The painting was cut so that only the visible parts of the painting revealed by the revetment remain. There is heavy craquelure on each portion of the figure. Severe losses to the paint of the halo (up to 80% is lost). Wear to the silverplated revetment.
