.52 caliber, 21" barrel, S/N 5416 . Marked Richmond, VA at the top of the breech of the barrel, with the serial number marked at the rear of the lockplate and on the upper tang. Saddle base missing the bar and ring. With brass buttplate.
The barrel, breech, hammer and lockplate all have a mottled grey patina with traces of blue throughout. The stock has nicks and dings throughout, with small age cracks near the fore end of the forearm. The nipple has a slight chip to it. The action is smooth. The bore is in good condition and could use a cleaning. Rifle tang has a period repair, with a small piece of brass formed to match the back of the tang. It was noted by the consignor that Dr. John M. Murphy told him this was a high number and one of the last to be made.
