American, late 19th-early 20th century. A sterling match safe with a repoussé design of draped figures running in search of shelter, marked sterling on interior; ht. 2 1/2, wd. 1 3/4 in.
The scene on this safe is based on Pierre-Auguste Cot's painting The Storm, first exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1880. The work was well-received and was widely reproduced. The original painting is now in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
