Carlton, John. Ship master. LS, 3 p., 8 x 13 in., "Washington." March 1836. Addressed to Secretary of the Navy, Mahlon Dickerson petitioning for a higher stipend for retirement.
"I was ordered to the Frigate Constitution in 1812 under the command of Commodore Bainbridge and was in the fight which resulted in the capture of H.B.M. Frigate Java," begins Carlton. During the War of 1812 he served as an officer on board the Constitution and took an active part in the victory against the Java. After the war, "[he] visited those ports that are most frequented on the coast of Chile and Peru Visited Columbia River and California...stopped at several ports on the coast of Brazil and arrived in the United States in 1819" (Washington, March 1836). Beyond sailing more places, including the West Indies, he also served under another important naval officer, Captain John "Mad Jack" Percival. "Thus it will be seen that have passed a greater portion of my time in actual sea service," he relayed. He felt that his extensive list earned him a higher commission for his retirement from the U.S. Navy. It is unknown whether the Navy granted his request, however, they were most certainly impressed by the ship master's storied twenty-four-year service record.
