Condition
Condition is consistent with age and use. The paint on silk has faded significantly in various areas. Loss of paint/paint flecking can be seen throughout, especially in the faces of the whiter figures. White paint is often the most delicate, especially on old items like this. There are approximately 7 distinct horizontal creases to silk, which are somewhat evenly spaced that are visible and most likely occurred when it was previously rolled up somewhere. These same creases have some tears to fabric in various spots. Additional fabric tears visible in other various areas of piece, including in face of some figures. The top left (or top proper right) has a dark vertical line and some loss to fabric, approximately 18 inches in length. The top middle of silk looks like it may have been previously repaired at some point. The fabric is quite delicate at this point and very thin. The bottom right (or bottom proper left corner) has about five spots of white mold that have grown from humidity getting inside of glass. The entire piece is worn and has missing spots of paint, fabric or both. It would need a very experienced conservator to take a look and see what can be done. The silk border is also worn and discolored in areas. The frame has suffered various scratches, dings, and loss to wood, as well as gilding. Despite all of this, this is a very handsome example.
