Large Napoleon III Ebonized Jewelry Casket, third quarter 19th century, with reverse serpentine sides, mounted with Sevres-style porcelain plaques depicting baskets of flowers, the corners with bronze putti over elaborately scrolled feet, set with a flower-decorated porcelain plaque with a bleu celeste border, with a velvet-lined interior, H.- 9 1/4 in., W.- 18 in., D.- 10 3/4 in.
Condition consistent with age and use. Minor scratches, scuffs, and dents are seen intermittently throughout. Three cracks are seen in the trim around the plaque in the lid. Sticker residue and a pea-size spot of wear are seen on the inside edge of the base. An approximate 1 cm triangular loss is seen on the interior edge of the lid. An approximate 1 inch strip of veneer is raised on the right bottom edge of the exterior. A very thin sliver of veneer is lacking from the bottom left and right edges. An approximate 1 cm strip of beaded decoration is loose on the front left edge of the top. Grey discoloration is noted around the plaque in the lid. Moderate wear is seen on the gilt. Scattered raised in-painting is observed on the floral decoration. An elegant piece.
