Descended through the Bartlet family of Newburyport, MA. Mr. Bartlet entertained LaFayette in his Newburyport home in 1824. See John Jay Currier, ‘History of Newburyport’.
In 1777 the Marquis de LaFayette came to Charleston SC to assist Americans in their struggle for independence from the British. After the revolution, upon an invitation from President Monroe, LaFayette visited 24 states in 1824 and 1825 where he was greeted as a hero of the American Revolution.
