Information provided by the Artist: John Yoyogi Fortes is a Filipino-American artist whose multi-layered works explore the physical and psychological landscapes of self. Integrating painting, drawing, and installation, his practice weaves together Filipino culture, pop art, and history, often infused with dark humor and wordplay. Born in Tokyo and raised in San Francisco, Fortes studied under mentors Terry Allen and Charles Gaines. His work has been exhibited internationally, from Japan to Norway, and is held in permanent collections including the Crocker Art Museum, Nevada Museum of Art, the Triton Museum, and the Asian American Art Centre. A recipient of the prestigious Joan Mitchell Foundation Grant, Fortes has also been supported by the California Arts Council and nominated for the Heinz Award. Residencies include the Bemis Center for Contemporary Art, KALA, and the Joan Mitchell Center. Based in Sacramento, Fortes continues to challenge artistic boundaries through an intricate, ever-evolving narrative of identity.
