Information provided by the Artist: Nissen King’s work explores the historical and cultural significance of the artist’s journey and evolution of mark. Each layer represents a contrasting and sometimes clashing medium, application, or subject matter. King likens the layering to a “palimpsest” and communicates that each layer is a time capsule of the artist's mark-making at a certain time and point in the artist's career. For King, it is most imperative that each series progresses from the work prior. Every body of work presents new obstacles and in overcoming those, King discovers new techniques and marks that ultimately define the work to come.
