Information provided by the Artist: Wosene (his professional name) is an American artist, born 1950 in Ethiopia’s dynamic center of Addis Ababa, Arat Kilo. He completed a BFA at the Addis School of Fine Arts in 1972, and an MFA at Howard University, Washington, D.C. in 1980. He is the first Ethiopian-born artist to use the script forms of his native Amharic language in contemporary fine art, and his ‘word-play’ has become the internationally recognized signature element in his paintings. While he uses no literal words, he creates an innovative visual language that can be ‘read’ and understood internationally. Also central to his work are the rhythms, riffs, improvisations, and counterpoints of jazz. Wosene’s paintings are in many international museums, corporate, and private collections. He resides and has his studio in Berkeley, CA. Wosene Worke Kosrof's work is represented in the Crocker's permanent collection.
