Michael Knigin (1942–2011) was an American artist, printmaker, publisher, and educator who played a significant role in the development of artistic life in the United States during the second half of the twentieth century. Michael Knigin was born in 1942 in the United States. He received his artistic education in New York at Cooper Union and Pratt Institute. In 1968, Knigin became co-founder and director of the print workshop Chiron Press. Chiron Press (1968–1972) became an important New York lithographic studio. The workshop printed works by major contemporary artists, including Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Louise Nevelson, Kenneth Noland, Larry Poons, and Tom Wesselmann. From 1967 and for more than three decades, Knigin taught at the Pratt Graphic Center, where he instructed students in lithography and other printmaking techniques. His contribution to the development of professional printmaking education in the United States is considered significant. In 1974, he served as Artistic and Technical Director of the Burston Graphics Art Centre in Jerusalem. Works by Michael Knigin are held in museum and public collections, including the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Brooklyn Museum, and the Museum of Modern Art. He passed away in 2011.
