Antique Chao Pao with Dragon Embroidery. This chao pao, which means court robe, was made in the late 19th-early 20th century in China. These court dresses were worn as the official formal costume for the imperial family and highest ranking nobles during court ceremonies and imperial sacrifices. Traditionally, this would be worn with a detachable triangular collar, hat, surcoat, necklace, belt, and boots. With this particular chao pao, it is a side fastening garment and would typically be referred to as a dragon robe considering the dragon at the center of the chest. The sleeves are striped with gold thread and it features hoof cuffs which help with horseback riding and protecting the hands from the elements. It is a full length piece and has a right front and the style is reminiscent of kimonos with its embroidery and length. Appearance wise, it is a purple silk garment with gold embroidery along the body of the robe and the sleeves. The face of several dragons are depicted on the front and back with black embroidered eyes outlined with white thread. There is an assortment of waves that decorates the bottom of the robe before it reaches its gold border that decorates the bottom. There are front and back center slits which cut through a geometric structure. Starting at the elbow are embroidered ribs on the sleeves which would grant the wearer flexibility while hunting. Smaller embroidered dragons decorate the cuffs of the sleeves with the hems of the sleeves featuring blue threaded attachments. There are several fasteners on the side with some having a gold ball to help secure it in place. Along the neckline and chest, there are the same black bands as on the sleeves with the same embroidery. The traditional pattern of dragons, waves, and clouds are featured throughout the court robe in gold and silk thread. The band at the bottom of the robe features diagonal stripes and bands of gold. The lining of the robe is silk as well and it is a light blue color with some fading and small spots. Laid flat, it has the following measurements: Length: 52", Shoulders: 26", Sleeves: 32", Chest: 29", and Waist: 30". There are some loose threads which can be seen along the gold band at the bottom, the sleeves, and a few other areas.
