Vintage Multitudinous Pieced Petit Point Flower Basket Quilt from 1955-1959, with 70,088 pieces by Ethel Clement from Fayette County, PA. The quilt measures 91.5x96". It is comprised entirely of Half Square Triangles, creating .5" squares. Even the areas of solid color are pieced in triangles. Why? Because Ethel was attempting to beat the number of pieces in Grace Snyder's Petit Point Flower Basket Quilt. Snyder's quilt had over 87,000 pieces and her quilts are currently in museums, including the Nebraska State Historical Society and the International Quilt Museum in Lincoln, Nebraska, This quilt by Ethel Clement is hand pieced and hand quilted. The fabric placement creates the graphic design of what appears to be 9 large basket blocks full of colorful flowers, with a pink and green pieced sashing, inner border and outer border with brown sawtooth edges, and a border of a green vine with leaves and buds. There is thin cotton batting and a solid pale pink reverse. There is a hand embroidered label on the reverse in one corner "Petit Point - 70,088 Pieces - 1954-1959 - E.T.C". The edge is finished with an applied pink solid binding. Included are Ethel's hand drafted pattern by her brother, the China plate where her inspiration originated from, a cookie tin , candy box, and cigar box full of small pieces, a small Diary documenting her progress, a pillow and 2 additional blocks in a different basket pattern, as well as ephemera relating to Grace Snyder's Quilts. The two photos of Ethel with her quilt are digital only, the family requested to keep the original photographs. This is truly a Once in a Lifetime Opportunity to acquire an important piece of American Material Culture.
