Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1970s
16 × 17 inches (each panel)
Reverse appliqué mola panels worked in three layers of orange, red, and black cotton, the front panel centering a large Latin cross rendered in bold pink and yellow outline against an orange ground, bearing a crucified figure with embroidered blue hair, beard, and green-striped body, inscribed above with the embroidered text "JESUCRISTO." Flanking figures include a kneeling supplicant in blue, a standing male figure in yellow, and a standing figure with animal companion at right. The lower field densely populated with narrative elements including a spirit figure with an embroidered face, a bird-like figure with yellow beak, a vessel, a bottle, and assorted zoomorphic and geometric forms. The reverse panel presents an alternative narrative composition with additional human figures, animals, weapons, and vessels in an equally saturated field. Corner cartouches throughout filled with multicolored crossed-bar motifs. The composition reflects the well-documented Guna tradition of absorbing and reinterpreting Catholic missionary imagery into the mola tradition. Techniques include reverse appliqué, appliqué, and embroidery. Applied to a full adult blouse constructed with black commercial floral-print cotton body fabric with large pink roses, yellow ric-rac trim at the yoke, and purple border at the hem.
