Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1970s
16.75 × 18 inches
Reverse appliqué mola panels worked in three layers of black, red, and orange cotton, each centering two large paired radial medallions rendered in bold red and orange outline against a black ground, each medallion composed of a dense starburst of multicolored appliquéd bars — blue, yellow, pink, green, teal, and white — radiating from a central cross-form hub ornamented with appliquéd squares. The medallions are set within a zigzag-edged circular field densely filled with multicolored embroidered dot arrays. The surrounding ground saturated throughout with horizontal multicolored embroidered bar elements in every register. The pink cotton body fabric of the blouse is elaborately adorned on the yoke with two pairs of crossed axe appliqués in green and yellow, each with a star-form head, and individual star appliqués in yellow, red, and white set within grey circular grounds on the sleeve cuffs, with additional loop-form appliqués at the cuff edges. A wide geometric yoke band features interlocking diamond and triangle forms in multicolor. Techniques include reverse appliqué, appliqué, and embroidery. Applied to a full adult blouse constructed with magenta cotton body fabric, yellow and grey yoke bands, and a red hem border.
