Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1970s
16 × 21 inches
Richly worked mola panel in reverse appliqué, appliqué, and embroidery, organized in two distinct registers: the upper field presents a pair of large bilaterally symmetrical botanical tree or fern forms with individually colored pinnate fronds in blue, white, pink, and green set against a salmon-red ground, flanked by dot-filled leaf forms and spiral volute motifs with embroidered dot centers; the lower register features a large spirit or amphibian figure in teal and black, its body densely filled with scattered dot embroidery in teal, green, yellow, and pink, with a central red cross-form body axis and two embroidered eyes with radiating stitch surrounds. Four lobed flower forms at the corners and lower flanks carry intricate multicolor wheel-and-petal embroidery. Additional scattered elements include dotted teardrop forms, serpentine passages, and triangular appliqué accents throughout. The upper edge retains a pink rickrack trim with yellow and red stripe border. The field is saturated with vertical multicolor dash embroidery throughout. Worked in three layers of black, red, and gold cotton. Fine, consistent hand-stitching throughout.
