Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1970s
14 × 19 inches
A striking mola panel worked in three layers of reverse appliqué, appliqué, and embroidery featuring an allover abstract botanical design of twelve large leaf forms connected by sinuous interlocking vine stems. The leaves are arranged in three horizontal rows of four, each joined at central X-shaped junctions where the stems cross, creating a rhythmic lattice across the field. Each leaf is enclosed within a rounded pod-like form outlined in black with blue and orange contour lines, and contains interior vein patterns rendered in a different color — including green, yellow, pink, purple, blue, and orange — giving each leaf an individual character within the repeating structure. Smaller leaf-shaped elements with similar interior veining are nestled between the larger forms at the connecting stems. Eye-shaped motifs with yellow or teal centers punctuate the central junctions. The surrounding field is densely filled with rows of multicolored vertical bars in blue, yellow, pink, white, purple, orange, and teal, some rendered in iridescent or metallic-toned fabric. Worked on red cotton ground with layers in black and blue creating bold, graphic contour lines throughout. Yellow rickrack trim edges the top. Fine hand-stitching throughout with consistent stitch density. Dense, fully filled composition demonstrating strong compositional control and precise bilateral symmetry. Single panel on red cotton ground with blue cotton border along the bottom and dark backing visible.
