Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1970s
16 × 16.5 inches
A bold mola panel worked in three layers of reverse appliqué, appliqué, and embroidery featuring two large frontal anthropomorphic faces placed side by side, each filling half the composition. The faces display elaborate multicolored headdresses rendered with vertical bars in blue, black, yellow, pink, and magenta, chevron brow ridges in black with blue and pink layering, arched eyebrows with embroidered lash details, almond-shaped eyes with white pupils, long appliquéd noses with embroidered nostrils, multicolored horizontal embroidered lines across the cheeks, and wide open crescent mouths revealing prominent white teeth. The left face is outlined in yellow and the right in green, each surrounded by concentric contour lines in orange and red that flow outward to fill the field. Centered above the two faces, a small jaguar mask with pointed ears, embroidered striped detailing, and a snout with nostrils peers downward between them. Below, a smaller anthropomorphic face with star-shaped body, embroidered features, and multicolored linear detailing occupies the space between the two chins. Vertical striped elements in green and yellow extend beneath the large faces. Worked on vibrant red cotton ground with layers in black, orange, yellow, green, blue, and pink. Fine hand-stitching throughout with consistent stitch density. Dense embroidered fill patterns with extensive running stitch and dot work create texture across the faces. Strong compositional control with balanced symmetry between the paired figures. Single panel on red cotton ground with dark printed cotton border along the lower edge.
