Panama (Guna Yala), circa 1970s
14.5 × 19.5 inches
Worked in three layers of reverse appliqué with applied appliqué and embroidery. A contact-era narrative panel, depicting two large crossed pistols set against a black ground. The pistols are rendered in red with blue outlines, their barrels crossing at center with gray appliquéd metal detailing on the chambers and embroidered mechanical accents. Curved grips in red feature yellow and teal appliquéd details. Thewords"PUNA VASQUEZ" are inscribed in multicolored appliquéd letters across the upper register of each panel, with each letter rendered in a different color — orange, green, pink, yellow, and teal. Dense multicolored slit-work fill bars in yellow, pink, orange, green, white, and lavender saturate the surrounding ground, creating a vibrant rhythm across the dark field. A red cotton border with rickrack trim frames each composition. Running-stitch embroidery in contrasting threads adds textural detail throughout. A bold contact-era composition likely commemorating a named individual, reflecting the Guna tradition of incorporating contemporary imagery and text into traditional mola design.
