Vintage c1930 Signature Quilt believed to be from Osgood, Indiana, specifically Cedar Creek Community Church (originally known as the Cedar Creek Methodist Episcopal Church), located just outside Osgood, Indiana. The quilt measures 81 by 72 inches. It is comprised of 56 9 Patch variation blocks, 7 by 7 inches, set on point, 8 by 7, with solid white setting squares and triangles. Each of the white setting squares include a hand embroidered in red thread signature or name inscription. The center block is Rev. W A Griner, and can be assumed that this quilt was made for Rev. Griner. Other names include John Bradshaw, Maude Huntington, Forest Hartley, LaVerne Bailey, Russell Griner, Sophia Bayne, May Coleman, Phyllis Bailey, Ernest Bailey, Warren Bailey, Dennis Bradshaw, Eugenia Bailey, Charlie Henderson, Opal Henderson, Holman Bradshaw, Myron Pratt, Joe Bradshaw, Raymond Coleman, Marian Huntington, Ollie King, Wourley King, Grace Bradshaw, Smith Henderson, Bessie Pratt, Alfred Pratt, Monta Hoover, Mayne Bradshaw, Anna B Griner, Esther Griner, Luella Henderson, and more Pratts, Hendersons, Baynes, and Colemans. A brief search of these names directed me to believe the quilt is from Osgood Indiana and the Cedar Creek CC. The quilt is hand and machine pieced, hand embroidered, and hand quilted. Thin cotton batting and an white cotton reverse. The edge is finished with an applied pink binding.
Condition
It is in poor condition with fading, spots, overall edge wear, and some fabric deterioration along the edges, but I believe signature quilts such as this deserve to be saved for study and historical purposes.
