LOCATELLI, ANTONIO
Il perfetto Cavaliere, opera corredata di stampe miniate rappresentanti le varie specie de' cavalli, incominciando dal selvaggio, co' loro differenti mantelli... Milan: Fratelli Sonzogno, 1825-1827. First edition. Two volumes, half purple morocco gilt (with the initials "E.S." at foot of spine), maroon textured paper sides, all edges sprinkled red. text 11 x 8 inches (28 x 20 cm); plates 12 x 9 inches (30.5 x 23 cm); text [viii], 1-107, [1] [4 pp. appendix], [109]-567, [1] pp.; plates [2] (title, v. blank), 24 superb hand-colored aquatint plates after Vernet of the different races of horses and their riders, 53 aquatint plates (numbered 1-52 with plate 44 bis) of horse anatomy, equipment, riding scenes, etc. some hand-colored, all plates printed rectos only. Binding with some minor wear, the boards of the plate volume unevenly faded, front hinge of that restored, the rear free endpaper removed. A few minor annotations in the text volume, some thumb-soiling, but a rather fresh copy overall.
A rare Italian color plate book on the horse, with a most attractive suite of plates rendered in soft-ground etching, perhaps with some added aquatint (not lithography as noted by some authorities). The book is quite rare in commerce. Podeschi Books on the horse and horsemanship, 124.
