Three volumes, period American brown sheep with black spine labels lettered in gilt. 7 5/8 x 4 1/2 inches (19.25 x 12 cm); viii, 325; iv, 368; iv, 368 pp.; frontispiece portraits in each volumes, respectively of Alexander Hamilton, John Jay, and James Madison. The bindings rubbed and worn, extremities chipped, joints weak; within quite toned, a few leaves creased in binding, occasional staining, generally minor. Bookplate of William Eager additionally imprinted with "Return this book after perusal."
The Federalist was originally published between October 1787 and May 1788, and the second volume and most of the third here is occupied with the reprinting. These 85 essays were written by Alexander Hamilton, John Jay and James Madison (appearing anonymously as "Publius"), and they were published sequentially in New York newspapers. The present version is preceded by the 1788 first book edition, the 1799 reissue of the sheets of the first, and the 1802 edition. Ford, Bibliotheca Hamiltonia, 116; Sabin 29987.
