- Lot Description
STEINBERG, SAUL Hitler, Mussolini, Hungary, Romania and Finland parade before Reichsmarschall Hermann Göring at gunpoint. Original drawing for Liberty Magazine, circa 1942. 8 x 11 7/8 inches (20 x 30 cm); pen and ink on card, one portion (Finland with a ring through its nose) added by the artist in paste-up. Liberty Art Dept. stamp on verso. Old central crease, some minor soiling, traces of paste-up adhesive on rear. Framed. Early in his career, Steinberg produced anti-fascist cartoons for Liberty Magazine, PM, and American Mercury (as well as his earliest New Yorker cartoons, the first of which was published October 25, 1941). Born in Romania, he moved to Italy in 1933, where he had a successful career as a cartoonist, but he was briefly placed in an internment camp between April and June of 1941, until he was able to flee to Ciudad Trujillo (Santo Domingo), where he lived until he was finally able to emigrate to America in 1942. During that brief period in Santo Domingo, he mailed his drawings to American publications. This is most likely why this drawing has a central crease, as it would have had to have been mailed to Liberty Magazine from his place of exile (but see note below). Original artwork for these publications is rare; we trace only one example of his work for Liberty Magazine ever offered at auction. N.B. According to The Saul Steinberg Foundation, this was published in Liberty June 14, 1942, p. 40. It was sent from Santo Domingo in a package of April 29, 1942 to Cesar Civita, Steinberg's agent in New York, who then found homes for them with American publications.
