BROWN, WILLIAM HENRY
Portrait Gallery of Distinguished American Citizens, with biographical sketches. Hartford: E. B. and E. C. Kellogg, 1845. First edition. Original publisher's cloth with gilt device and lettering, rebacked and cornered in brown morocco. 15 7/8 x 12 inches (43 x 32 cm); 111, [1, blank] pages; with twenty-seven tinted lithographed silhouette portraits of distinguished Americans, as well as twenty-seven lithographed facsimile samples of their autographs inserted throughout. Restoration evident on the letter of Washington and the preface, a couple of plates toned but generally a clean copy. Rebacked as noted.
With the exception of the portrait of Washington, all of these portraits of notable Americans were taken from life, taken in silhouette by Brown with scissors, and presented here in facsimile against lithographed backgrounds. The subjects include John Marshall, John Q. Adams, Richard C. Moore, Andrew Jackson, John Forsyth, William Henry Harrison, John C. Calhoun, De Witt Clinton, Richard M. Johnson, Joel Poinsett, Alexander Macomb, Martin Van Buren, Samuel Southard, Henry Clay, Henry Wise, Thomas Hart Benton, John Tyler, Levi Woodbury, Thomas Cooper, Daniel Webster, William White, Silas Wright, Nathaniel Tallmadge, Felix Grundy, Dixon Lewis, and John Randolph. Reportedly, a portion of the edition was destroyed by fire; those copies dated 1846 (unlike ours, which bears the original date of publication) may be a new edition.
