HEMINGWAY, ERNEST
Typed letter signed to Taylor "Bear Tracks" Williams. Finca Vigia, San Francisco de Paula, Cuba: 23 April 1953. A typed letter signed in pencil "Best always, Papa," on one sheet of Finca Vigia stationery, 11 x 8 3/8 inches (28 x 21 cm)

A letter from Ernest Hemingway affectionately signed "Papa" to the famed Sun Valley sporting guide, Taylor "Bear Tracks" Williams, here with good fishing content. Hemingway opens by mentioning seeing Henry Ford and his wife, but turning to fishing informs Williams "Your rods sound wonderful," and when it comes to a photographer who was supposed to bring them but didn't, Papa writes "I always figrued the photographer to trust was Chape or Papy without tequila." He continues reporting his wife Mary will compete in a women's only fishing tournament at Paraiso, to the west within Cuba, where he encourages Williams to meet him for a series of fishing tournaments. These include the Tutankamen Tournament, the Vedado Tennis Club Tournament, and the Havana Yacht Club Tournament. For each, Hemingway reports that they can "Fish it or skip it."
To further encourage him, Hemingway entices Williams with "We have fine fishing on yellow-tail and snappers and all the fun fish down at Paraiso. It is a lovely place with nice mountains behind and you would like it. They say there is good flyfishing for bonefish."
See also a photograph in this section depicting Hemingway with Williams, with Hemingway's inscription mentioning a prize fish.
