[AMERICAN OUTLAWS]
Five interesting carte de visite of outlaws and others from the 1876 Northfield Bank Raid. Albumen prints, mounted to publisher's card. Circa 1860s-1870s. 4 x 2.5 inches (10 x 6) cm. Cards are worn, some dust soiling, noticeable losses to one card, later pencil annotations on versos.
The group includes images of the Northfield Posse, Charlie Pitts of the James Gang captured postmortem, Sheriff Thomas Reed of Northfield, Minnesota, Bill Chadwell (also of the James Gang), and Joseph Lee Haywood, a bank teller killed in the Northfield Raid.
In August 1876, the James-Younger gang arrived in Minnesota. The gang had their sights set on Northfield Minnesota's First National Bank. It proved to be a bloody and distraous robbery attempt by the James Gang, and marked the end of their reign. They managed to escape with $26.70 at a time when the bank held over $12,000. Bill Chadwell was killed in a shootout that day, most likely with the Northfield Posse, armed-citizens of Northfield; Charlie Pitts escaped and was captured two weeks later in Madelia Minnesota, where he died in a shootout. Joseph Lee Haywood was unfortunately the acting cashier on the day of the Northfield Raid. Viewed together, the cards compose an engaging narrative about one of the most famous failed outlaw attempts in Ameican history.
