TZARA, TRISTAN and MATISSE, HENRI, illustrator
Midis gagnés, poèmes, huit dessins de Henri Matisse. Paris: Éditions Denoël, [1948]. "Nouvelle edition," one of 15 press-numbered copies, this A4, with the pencil-signed lithographic portrait frontispiece of a woman by Matisse printed on chine collé, the book signed by Tzara on the title verso. Publisher's wrappers in glassine. 9 3/8 x 7 1/2 inches (23.5 x 19 cm); 168 pp., with eight illustrations by Matisse in the text, plus the lithographic frontispiece. Light binding wear, a few spots of foxing to the wrappers, a tiny stain in the gutter margin of the frontispiece just touching the last letter of the signature. Collector name, date and location ("Stockholm") in ink on front free endpaper.
This is one of the numbered 15 author's copies, aside from the edition of 1,000, of this second edition of Tzara's poems. The magnificent signed lithographic frontispiece of a woman, present only in those proof copies intended for Tzara, differs entirely from that in the edition of 1939, the deluxe copies of which contained an etched image of a seated woman. It is a substantially rarer work by Matisse altogether, of which we trace only one single example at auction. Duthuit 24.
