Collection: The Evelyn D. Farland CollectionFrench/American, 1890-1976 Varlop III, 1965 Signed Man Ray, titled VARLOP III, dated 1965; dedicated For Leo - object of my affection on the underside Wooden carpenter's plane 8 1/2 x 5 x 2 1/2 inches (21.59 x 12.7 x 6.35cm) Provenance: Mr. and Mrs. Leo and Evelyn D. Farland, New York (a gift of the artist) Thence by descent to the estate Literature: Jean-Hubert Martin, Rosalind Krauss, Brigitte Hermann, Man Ray: Objets de mon affection, sculptures et objets, Catalogue raisonné, Paris, 1983, no. 54, p. 61, illustration of the original object. Executed in 1965, this is a variant of the artist’s original object Varlop of 1935 and its four replicas constructed in the 1960s. The present object does not include a billiard ball as in the original and the other examples. In 1966, an edition of 10 examples plus artist’s proofs was published by Marcel Zerbib, Paris. Andrew Strauss and Timothy Baum of the Man Ray Expertise Committee have confirmed the authenticity of this work under reference 00592-O-2025 and that this work will be included in the Catalogue of Objects & Sculpture of Man Ray, currently in preparation.Overall in good condition. Some surface scratches and wood loss as part of the natural aging of the material.
