OVERBEEK, BONAVENTURA VAN
Reliquae antiquae urbis Romae. Amsterdam: J. Crellius, 1708. Three volumes in period Dutch vellum gilt with the armorial block of Queen Anne, all edges gilt. 21 x 15 1/2 inches (53.5 x 39.5 cm); with engraved frontispiece, dedication leaf to Queen Anne, portrait, folding map and 146 engraved plates (one folding) with accompanying text, engraved vignettes and culs-de-lampe throughout. The joints starting on each volume, spines separating on the first, but still a remarkable binding worthy of restoration. Internally, a few leaves with marginal tears, creases and browning, third volume bumped, but in all generally a clean copy. Bookplates of the Right Honorable Charles Lord Halifax (dated 1702; Halifax died in 1715, so he is presumably the first owner) and Sir Lucius O'Brien, 13th Baron Inchiquin, the Irish politician (d. 1855).
This series of Roman views was dedicated to Queen Anne, and it remained unfinished upon Overbeek's death in 1706. His nephew completed the work. The binding, though worn and to a degree defective, is intriguing, and given the provenance, was likely intended for presentation, though whether it was presented by the publisher or by the Queen is a question difficult of resolution at this remove. It seems likely Dutch in its design and execution. What is certain is that several other sets exist with the same tools, though bound in different materials.
