Attributed to Jean-Baptiste Boulard, the original gilding by Louis-Francois Chatard, and possibly delivered to the Royal Household of Louis XVI for his Cabinet interieur at Château de Fontainebleau, circa 1785
The gilding of later date, with contemporary Aubusson upholstery, each chaise with arched rectangular back carved with laurel leaves, beading and acanthus, the front rails with paterae at the corners, on stop fluted tapering legs upholstered in period Aubusson tapestry (not the original upholstery) depicting floral sprays with ribbon-tied garlands, each chaise bearing two labels at the underside of the back rail, of which three with faded, not legible inscriptions, one with gilder's label of Louis-Francois Chatard inscribed:
"« année 178... garde meuble du roi / Suivant l'ordre du Chatard, Peintre & doreur Faux-bourg Mont-Martre / à Paris / pour M
Height 39 inches (99 cm), width 21 inches (53.3 cm), depth 19 inches (48.2 cm), seat height 15 1/2 inches (39.5 cm).(2)
Condition
Although the Aubusson upholstery believed to be contemporary, it is not the original upholstery, each chaise overall with losses to gilding, distress to finish.One chaise with splits to joint at underside of proper left leg, both chaises overall with sturdy construction.Please note that Doyle does not guarantee the condition of the upholstery.
