Attributions to several Tuscan artists have been proposed for this work. It has been related to Giovambattista Verrocchi (Florentine, 1494–1569), the circle of Leonardo Grazia (Pistoia, 1502–1548), and to Giovanni Antonio Lappoli (Arezzo, 1492–1552). It is perhaps closest to Lappoli’s Visitation of 1524 (Arezzo, Badia), which features a similar Figure of Saint Joseph and a comparably shallow yet grand architectural background. A variant of the composition, by a different hand, was sold at Finarte Semenzato, Milan, on April 5, 2003, lot 66.
Condition
Compound panel comprising four planks. The face of the Virgin, the figure of Joseph, and the lower half of the Christ Child have been heavily restored. Scattered small losses, mostly near the edges and along the joins of the panels.
