Two cabinet cards of Major General Wesley Merritt. Albumen prints, card-mounted, circa 1860s-1890s. Larger photo 3 3/4 x 5 1/4 inches (10 x 13) cm. Earlier card of Generals Merritt and Martin Hardin is lightly spotted and dust soiled, Merritt's signature in ink is below image and extends to the lower right margin, verso bears some dust soiling, blotter paper remnants, later pencil and ink annotations. Later card is worn, a fold at upper left corner, minor spotting to extremities, small loss to publisher's signature at foot of card, verso bears some spotting, an ex-library stamp, later pen and pencil annotations.
The first photo is of Brigadier Generals Wesley Merritt and Martin Hardin. In ink the signature reads: "W. Merritt, Brigadier General U.S. Army Major General U.S. Volunteers." This photo is a reprint of a negative originally taken by Mathew Brady between 1860–1865 as part of his series of Civil War-Era Personalities and Scenes. Both Merritt and Hardin were involved in landmark battles, including Gettysburg and the Overland Campaign. The second photo is of Merritt in 1898, the year of the Spanish-American War. He was placed in command of the Eighth Army Corps in Manila during the War, and later served as the first American Military Governor of the Philippines. The portrait of Merritt was featured in the Illustrated Roster of California Volunteer Soldiers in the War with Spain. Merritt is shown wearing his military uniform, with prominent epaulets and a decorative sash bearing several medals and service ribbons.
