John Langdon served as the first President pro tempore of the Senate, in addition to serving as Governor of New Hampshire. He is considered the most important New Hampshire politician of his era. Meshech Weare was the First Governor of the State (when the office bore the title of "President").
The 1781 Act, formally titled, "AN ACT for Supplying the Continental Army with Ten Thousand Gallons of West-India RUM," was a legislative measure passed by the State of New-Hampshire to meet supply demands from the Continental Congress during the Revolutionary War.
The Act was a direct response to a Congressional demand for rum from the state of New Hampshire to help provision the Continental Army. Rum was considered an essential ration and morale booster for soldiers during this period.
This Reovlutionary War document highlights the logistical challenges faced by American forces and the role that individual states played in supporting the war effort through specific legislative acts. 1781 was a critical year in the war, culminating in the decisive Siege of Yorktown in October. The Continental Army frequently struggled with supply issues, leading states to pass various acts to raise men, money, and provisions (like rum) through impressment of supplies if needed, or quotas assigned to towns.
This historic Revolutionary War document (a four-page printed Broadside, is cataloged as Evans 17253). It was printed in Exeter, New Hampshire, and dated August 31, 1781.
