March 14, 1801-Dated George Washington Memorial and Federal Era Mezzotint Print, the image measures plate outline measures 14" x 10" (by sight) plus outer margins, the original artist unknown. An important British engraving produced in 1801 following President George Washington's death in December 1799. This rare image has been professionally framed, displayed under TRUVUE Museum UV-Plexiglas in an antique period style gold-gilt and mottled brown frame to an overall size of 17.5" x 12.75".
The image shows a full-length standing George Washington wearing his gentleman's clothes, with long white stockings, his right hand behind his back holding his tricorn hat. His left hand rests on a long document on which is written, "AMERICA INDEPENDENT 1775" / "A TREATY WITH FRANCE 1778" / "A GENERAL PEACE 1783" (The Treaty of Paris), all important dates of the American Revolutionary War. The document shown cascading from a heavy decorative carved table with massive books at bottom right beneath it, and a world globe at the far side atop the desk. In the background is an open window with a landscape, next to billowing drapery.
Overall, the Copper Plate outline is embossed in the heavy sheet paper and the detail very clear. There is some minor conservation and repairs below the image at the bottom portion that do not affect the image, only the outer portions of the selvage . Particularly scarce, being from the early state of the engraved plate, before the engraved copper-plate was later known to be reworked. See: Hart 782; Baker 431.
