"Washington Farewell Address" Benevolent Society Imprint
1812-Dated War of 1812 Period, Membership Book titled: (George) "Washington's Farewell Address to the People of the United States," (dated at Washington's conclusion on page 40, September 17, 1796), "Published for the Washington Benevolent Society", Mr. Daniel Smead's membership copy, Complete, Fine.
A nice quality, original book, with completed insert Partially-Printed and Completed Membership page, 40 pages, complete, titled: "Washington's Farewell Address to the People of the United States." This book was published for Franklin County the Greenfield (Massachusetts) Washington Benevolent Society, Printed and Sold by Denio & Phelps Greenfield, 1812. Original marbled decorated cardboard hard covers, measures 4" x 6.5", with an uncolored frontispiece Portrait of George Washington. The book is clean with lightly worn boards with crisp inner pages throughout. The outer boards are marbled and the spine is leathered. Some light foxing and light paper aging, yet this book is over 200 years old.
The very first inside "Membership" registration page states that this book's owner, Daniel Smead (1772-1847) here admitted as a Member of the Washington Benevolent Society of the County of Franklin on February 5th, 1812." This is Smead's personal copy that is numbered and presented to him, boldly Signed by R. E. Narrand as the organization's President. A wonderful, truly historic George Washington related artifact with a great provenance.

When Daniel Smead was born on 27 February 1772, his father, Reuben Smead who was one of the Fort Massachusetts Captives in 1746, was 36, and his mother, Rebeckah Corse, was 29. He had at least 3 sons and 4 daughters with Lucy Parker. He died on 9 March 1847, in Branch, Michigan, United States, at the age of 75, and was buried in Snow Prairie Cemetery, Bethel, Bethel Township, Branch, Michigan, United States.
