1860 Abraham Lincoln Presidential Campaign Textile All Hand-Stitched Patriotic "American Flag" Designed Quilt
1860-Dated Pre Civil War, Abraham Lincoln Presidential Campaign Hand-Stitched "American Flag" Designed Colorful Quilt, an Original Patriotic Period Textile with Sewn Text "Free all Negros" and "Free the Slaves" plus "Vote for Mr. A. Lincoln", Choice Very Fine or better.
An extraordinary Handmade Running Stitch American Quilt that is the most fabulous 1860 Abraham Lincoln Presidential Campaign Textile we have ever offered. This Quilt measures 54" Long x 41" tall obviously designed in an American Flag pattern. It was possibly created in this size for dual use for a child, but there are no indications of any significant use. This Quilt has some expected light age, yet retains a clean colorful overall appearance. There are no major stains, tears or detractions seen. There is also extensive Hand-Stitching made with white thread expressing Patriotic and Anti-Slavery sentiments throughout the decorated front side, sewn with lettering measuring about 2.5" tall on average and easily readable. This Quilts face side has stitched text that reads, in full:
"May the use of / our needles prick / the conscience / of Slaveholders /
Vote for Mr. A. Lincoln".
The Stitched Campaign & Slavery related wording on the Blue Canton Field within the sections of the large central Star Design read, in full:
"1860 Whig Peace Vote Union / Free all Negros / Lincoln / Free the Slaves / Hannibal Hamlin / Whig / Honest Abe"
The word "Whig" appears twice within the blue field of the flag which has the large Star design, once near Lincoln's name, and the other being near Hannibal Hamlin's name. Both of them were members of the Whig Political Party, before the Whig party effectively collapsed in 1855, when Seward led that party into joining the new Republican Party, and therefore no "Whig" Candidate was fielded for the 1856 Presidential election. There were still active diehard Whigs even as late as 1860, though there were no candidates running under the Whig Party banner, and the maker of this quilt may well have been one of those diehard Whigs.
The Patriotic Political nature of the family Quilt continued later in future decades, with several notable items added to the back side of this Quilt, added on the white linen. These added pieces are sewn to the back, having added sections of Blue, Brown and Black backgrounds so that the white thread would stand out more prominently with the stitched wording, except for the first apparent addition on a white background but using blue thread, reading in full:
"Treason / Copper Heads / Fool Democrats + Confederate Sympathizers"
The blue section below contains two 5 inch tall white Christian Crosses containing the text reading, in full:
"Pr. Bixby - Pr. Bixby - Killed Gettys / Burg 1863"
Three pieces are side by side on the reverse with stitched wording reading, in full:
"April 14 1865 -- RIP -- Our Beloved Lincoln Murdered"
And lastly, a piece in brown placed above the others with stitched wording reading, in full:
"1892 / Benjamin / Harrison / + Whitelaw Reid / Republican"
No doubt this Quilt was kept by a family for generations, from time to time adding these historic political events. The even age to the textile and minor changes over time add to the authenticity and importance of this uniquely created lovely American Quilt.
