1862 Civil War "Special Orders" No. 205 From Major General David Hunter at Hilton Head, Port Royal, S.C.
July18, 1862-Dated Civil War Period, Manuscript Document "Special Order No. 205", with printed "Headquarters, Department of the South. Hilton Head, Port Royal, S.C.", by Command of Major General David Hunter, ordering a Capt. of the 3rd Artillery to go North to procure horses and men "to fill up his Battery to a War Standard", Choice Very Fine.
This original Civil War document is 1 page, and measures 7.75" x 9.75" signed by General David Hunter's Aide and Chief of Staff "Charles G Halprine". Well written on light blue lined wove period paper, easily readable official copy, from Head Quarters Department of the South, Hilton Head, SC, dated January 5, 1863, as noted at bottom left, and Signed by "Israel Sealy, 1st Lt., 4th NY Volunteers, and Acting Asst. Adjutant General". Interesting content, ordering Capt. J. Hamilton of the 3rd Artillery to go North to procure horses and men to fill up his battery and also to make requisitions in Washington DC... "to get up a Field Battery of 6 guns for the command of Bvt. Major Langdon of the 1st Artillery. Small edge chip at right not touching any text. This Special Orders document reads, in part:
"Captain J. Hamilton, 3d Art'y, will at once proceed north for the purpose of procuring Horses and Men to fill up his Battery to a War Standard. For this purpose he will report to the Adjt. General of the Army on arriving at Washington. He will also make such requisitions on the proper departments as will enable him to get up a Field Battery of 6 guns for the command of Bvt. Maj. Langdon of the 1st Artillery, now stationed at Beaufort, S.C. As soon as this is accomplished, Capt. Hamilton will return promptly to this place. In case of failure in procuring all that he may require, he will without unnecessary delay return to this Post. -- By Command of -- Maj. Genl. D. Hunter -- (Signed) Charles G. Halpine -- Asst. Adjt. Genl. & Chief of Staff".
