This handsome large Engraving measures 31" tall x 40" wide is titled, "Washington Irving and His Literary Friends at Sunnyside". It depicts an imaginary gathering of 15 Leading American Literary Figures of the early nineteenth century all together at Washington Irving's home, Sunnyside, in Tarrytown, New York. This title: "Washington Irving and His Literary Friends at Sunnyside" (is also known as "A Literary Party at the Home of Washington Irving" or "Our Great Authors"). This engraving was based on an oil painting by Christian Schussele and Felix Octavius Darley, artists, created using individual photographs of the writers, taken by the celebrated photographer Mathew Brady. Professionally framed, measuring fully to 32.5" tall x 42" wide, housed in a modern black wood frame and displayed under clear special UV Plexiglas and ready to hang on display. The gathering itself is a fictional composite scene, as many of the men lived in different places or died before this image was created. In fact, Washington Irving had died in 1859. The engraving shows 15 literary figures, including Washington Irving seated in the center of his library. Among those depicted are The writers portrayed are, from left to right, Henry T. Tuckerman, Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr., William Gilmore Simms, Fitz-Greene Halleck, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Nathaniel Parker Willis, William H. Prescott, Irving, James Kirke Paulding, Ralph Waldo Emerson, William Cullen Bryant, John Pendleton Kennedy, James Fenimore Cooper, and George Bancroft. A bust of William Shakespeare is also visible in the background.
